Open data is a philosophy and practice requiring that certain data be freely available to everyone, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control. [wikipedia]

Open data has four key attributes:

  • The work is accessible to everyone.
  • You have the right to redistribute the work.
  • You have the right to modify and make derivative works.
  • The work is available in open, non-proprietary formats.

Mecklenburg County believes in the power of open data and the ingenuity of its citizens. Inspired by Data.gov, Vancouver’s Open Data Catalog, and San Francisco’s DataSF, Mecklenburg County is joining the movement to democratize public sector data.

Opening public data enhances government transparency and encourages public participation and collaboration. By providing access to open data, Mecklenburg County empowers its citizens to create innovative tools and applications.
